What is the difference between ska, punk, and ska-core?
Q. I know all of these types of music are closly related. But which one came about first? How did the others branch off the first? Where did they come from and how? and for the heck of it. Which one is your favorite and what band do you like. My favorite out of all the styles would have to be- Ska-core, with Big D and The Kids Table.

A. Ska is a type of Jamaican music combining elements of traditional mento and calypso with an American jazz and rhythm and blues sound. It is notable for its shuffling, scratchlike tempo and jazz-like horn riffs on the offbeat. Originating in Jamaica, possibly in the 1950s, it was a precursor to rocksteady and later reggae. It was the predominant form of music listened to by rude boys, although many ska artists condemned the violent subculture. It is also popular with mods and skinheads, with artists such as Symarip, Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker and The Pioneers aiming songs at these groups as early as the 1960s. How do you write Ska Music?
Q. Ska bands seem to be pretty popular in high school these days, so me and my friends started one. We've got a Tenor Sax, drums, trumpet, bass, guitar, and me playing trombone. This question is for any good ska bands out there... How do you guys start writing music? I've written music before, and I kind of got basics down. How do YOU start your songs, and what are you sure to put in every one of your songs?

How to write a Ska song?
Q. I'm in a fairly new Ska band, and I'd like to learn to write songs for Ska. What are typical lyrical topics? What is a good way to structure a Ska song? How can I learn how to create a good Ska sound? I already listen to mostly Ska music, I play bass, and I've been an amateur poet for many years.

A. First, pick something to sing about. This can be almost anything. Since it's your first song, write something that'll engage the crowd...similar to "Skank Tutorial" by I Voted For Kodos. You could also venture into our current economy's woes, how the scene is dead ("God Save the Scene" by Public Access) or make fun of another band (that's risky, do not do that if you hate confrontations especially if it's similar to "I Hate The Unseen" by Darkbuster). Next, figure out your song's structure. Are you going to rhyme or just sing it really fast (refer to Streetlight Manifesto) in hopes that no one realizes that your lyrics don't have meaning?
