What instrument would be fun to play ska music with?
Q. I'm thinking of taking up another instrument but I am not sure what I should try. I already play drums, and I don't really feel like taking up guitar or bass, and I was thinking of taking up something like a trumpet because I really like ska music (bands like The Aquabats, Mustard Plug, etc.) but I am not sure what instrument (like the trumpet or saxophone) is in the majority of ska music and makes the coolest ska-like sound.
Asked by Droogie84 - Sun Aug 24 21:34:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. trumpet, trombone, sax... any one of those are awesome choices. i personally play the sax, and it works really well in the the ska sound. but when i'm listening to ska, it's always the trombone that sticks out for me. you can do such awesome things with that slide! your choice then. anything musical is a good pick! good luck, and have fun. p.s. yes, aquabats rock!

What kind of horns are there in ska bands?
Q. I want to start a ska band, but most of the horn players i know are saxophonists. can you have a ska band with 2 saxophones(a tenor and alto) or are trumpets and trombones necessary?
Asked by freakofnouture - Sat Sep 12 18:50:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are no set rules. However, I do feel at least one brass instrument makes a ska band sound much better. You could certainly have a tenor sometimes play the trombone part, and have the alto play the trumpet part, but with the brass color it might sound kind of empty. Horn lines in ska songs are usually simple enough that maybe one of your saxophone friends could take up trumpet or trombone. Another option would be to just start with 2 saxophones and see if you can meet and impress some trumpet/trombone players in your area so that they join.

Any suggestions on playing ska music on the trumpet?
Q. Is there anything vital to the trumpet that gives it that ska sound? I don't play the trumpet but I am thinking about giving it a go but I wanna see if there is anything necessary or helpful to giving it that "ska" sound.
Asked by Droogie84 - Sun Aug 24 21:37:45 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, what instrument do you play? It would be inadvisable to play ska on a totally new instrument. As you might know, the instruments used for ska are typically guitar, bass, saxophone, trombone, and trumpet. Do you already play any of those instruments? As for the ska sound on trumpet, the ska trumpet usually is playing "above" every one else. It usually plays really high notes, that only people who have been playing for years can hit. Also, what do you listen to? Many bands don't use the horn section a lot. But Streetlight Manifesto typically use a lot of horns. And they play in a minor key. My suggestion, if you want to play trumpet, get a teacher of some sort to teach you. You're most likely not going to find one who teaches ska,… [cont.]

Q. They sound so much different from the actual song. Am i forgetting some special tuning?
Asked by masta-m - Sat Oct 11 23:57:55 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The key to playing ska guitar is using only the top 3/4 thinnest strings. Playing the higher triads of chords. You may be playing the whole barre chord, I'm not sure. Also stroke upwards and mute the strings immediately after hitting the notes, the more staccato and sharp you can make them, the better.

How is Streetlight Manifesto considered Ska compared to real Reggae Ska like The Charmers?
Q. You Have Ska which is Reggae Ska like the Charmers then you have a jump to a wierd Ska mix like Streetlight and Reel Big Fish. Wouldn't that be like a mix between Swing/Jazz and Punk Rock. The only thing that sounds like rock and raggae is Sublime. how does that work?
Asked by Saint. - Thu Jul 10 13:24:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's just third wave, a new generation. It's evolving but it still has all the main ingredients. It still has the "guitar shuffle," with the upstrokes, which is the number one thing that makes it ska. It may be different but all music goes through changes over time. Those bands still have the ska beat, it's just sped up and much more punk-fused than the traditional stuff, which is why it's often called ska-punk. It's not as though the sound jumped from one extreme to the other. There was the '70's 2-tone sound in between, plus there are a whole bunch of related and influential genres. You'll find the more research you do the more you find out the transition isn't all that drastic. Of course, there are a lot of people who remain loyal to… [cont.]

A. Ska came before reggae, starting in the early 60's. It's faster, more upbeat, and typically it's more of a dance music than anything else, where reggae tackles social and political issues sometimes. Some examples are The Skatalites, Byron Lee, Prince Buster, early Jimmy Cliff and Desmond Dekker. Read more about it here:
