How is Streetlight Manifesto considered Ska compared to real Reggae Ska like The Charmers?
Q. You Have Ska which is Reggae Ska like the Charmers then you have a jump to a wierd Ska mix like Streetlight and Reel Big Fish. Wouldn't that be like a mix between Swing/Jazz and Punk Rock. The only thing that sounds like rock and raggae is Sublime. how does that work?

A. It's just third wave, a new generation. It's evolving but it still has all the main ingredients. It still has the "guitar shuffle," with the upstrokes, which is the number one thing that makes it ska. It may be different but all music goes through changes over time. Those bands still have the ska beat, it's just sped up and much more punk-fused than the traditional stuff, which is why it's often called ska-punk. It's not as though the sound jumped from one extreme to the other. There was the '70's 2-tone sound in between, plus there are a whole bunch of related and influential genres. You'll find the more research you do the more you find out the transition isn't all that drastic. Of course, there are a lot of people who remain loyal to… [cont.]
